PUSHING THE ELEPHANT

"When you don't forgive others, you keep building a hell for yourself" says Pushing the Elephant subject Rose Mapendo. When civil war came to Rose's Congolese village, she was separated from her five-year-old daughter, Nangabire. Rose escaped with 9 of her 10 children and eventually resettled in Phoenix, Arizona.

After more than a decade, Nangabire and Rose reunite in the U.S. where they come to terms with the past and build a new future. Going beyond tragedy, the film tells the story of a woman who emerged from violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo as a committed advocate for the rights of women and for forgiveness and reconciliation.

Join us for this powerful screening and stay afterward to meet Mr. Wemba-koy Okonda the President of OkoNGO a local Congolese born community organizer who came to the US in 1997 escaping the first of the many devastating wars in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mr. Okonda will attend BOTH events and share stories from dozens of Congolese refugees and asylees who have settled in the Puget Sound Region.
